LA Black Maternal Fund (Monthly)
Black mothers are three times more likely to die from a pregancy related cause than white women (CDC). Variation in quality healthcare, structural racism, and implicit bias contribute to this disproportionality. The Tzeda Fund for Black Doulas invests in community organizations prioritizing Black doula care to support maternal health and decrease rates of early infant mortality.
Why Now: Black Women for Wellness is a multi-generational, community-based organization committed to the health and well-being of Black women and girls by building healthy communities through access and development of health education, awareness, empowerment and advocacy opportunities and activities. L.A. County has the largest number of African Americans in Southern California. (Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, 2016). In addition, more than half of L.A .county residents are females, a large percentage of which are women of color. (Walter R. McDonald & Associates, Inc, 2006). Women residing in SPA 6 are disproportionately impacted by health disparities that impact the African American community, including obesity and lack of health insurance. CinnaMoms work to increase breastfeeding rates among Black/African American women at the PHFE WIC Program. They provide encouragement and a safe space to chat about historical feeding practices, perceptions of breastfeeding, familial feeding experiences, and the health benefits of breastfeeding.
